Tropospheric Ducting & SCADA Networks

Dissertation Research Project

Exploring how atmospheric propagation anomalies, specifically targetting tropospheric ducting, influence the reliability, availability, and latency of radio‑based SCADA systems.

This site hosts interactive visualisations through the "tropospheric map" function which amongst other abilities, displays modified refractivity gradient data across pressure levels of 1000, 950 and 925Pa (pascals) for the entire geographical spread of the UK (typically from ground level to around 800 meters to best capture the effects on typically low altitude SCADA radio telemetry). All predicted weather data is collated from the DWD ICON-EU model and is calculated in full every day using the refractivity index and modified refractivity formulas provided by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU, 2003).
